How mbox / EML converter works

Email archives come in two main formats. mbox packs thousands of messages into one big file — that's what Google Takeout produces. EML is one file per message, easier to open individually. This tool translates one into the other, both ways, without installing any software.

Step by step

  1. 1 You pick your files and the output format you want.
  2. 2 The files are uploaded then read message by message.
  3. 3 A .zip archive containing the result is prepared.
  4. 4 You download it. Your original files are deleted from our servers as soon as it finishes.

What to put in each field

  • Your files *
  • Output format **

* One or more .mbox files, or a batch of .eml files. Don't mix the two formats in one submission.

** To EML if you want one file per message; to mbox if you want a single file to import elsewhere.

Good to know

  • No mailbox is touched: the tool works only on the files you upload.
  • Outlook's .msg format is not accepted as input — it is proprietary. The EML viewer explains how to convert it.
