How Mailbox backup works

This tool downloads your whole mailbox into a single .zip file. Inside, one file per message, arranged in the same folders as in your mail app. It's a copy you keep yourself, readable without us: you can open it with Thunderbird, Outlook or Apple Mail, or import it again later.

Step by step

  1. 1 You enter the credentials for the mailbox to back up.
  2. 2 We check the connection and estimate the size of the archive.
  3. 3 You start the backup: each message is fetched then placed in the archive.
  4. 4 A download link appears when it's ready. The archive stays available for 48 hours, then it is deleted from our servers.

What to put in each field

  • Email address *
  • Password **
  • Incoming server (IMAP) ***
  • Get an email when it's done ****

* The address of the mailbox you want a copy of.

** The password for that mailbox — or the app password if your provider requires one (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo).

*** Filled in automatically for known providers. Otherwise, look for “IMAP server” in your host's help pages.

**** Optional, but recommended here: a large backup can take a while, and the email carries the link.

Good to know

  • Your mailbox is not modified: the tool only reads.
  • The archive uses the .eml format, a standard readable by any mail software.
