How Mailbox tester works

Before running an operation on a mailbox, it's reassuring to know the credentials are right. This tool simply tries the connection and tells you what it sees: the number of messages, the list of folders, the total size. Nothing is modified, nothing is copied. It's the first tool to try when in doubt.

Step by step

  1. 1 You enter the credentials to check.
  2. 2 We attempt the connection and, if it succeeds, list the folders.
  3. 3 The result appears: either the mailbox inventory, or the exact reason for refusal.

What to put in each field

  • Email address *
  • Password **
  • Incoming server (IMAP) ***
  • Port and security ****

* The full address, exactly as you use it to sign in.

** If the connection is refused although the password is right, it usually means an app password is required: Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo demand one for any external software.

*** If you don't know it, the “IMAP & SMTP settings” tool gives it for most providers.

**** Leave 993 and SSL. Only try something else if it fails, and on your host's advice.

Good to know

  • Your mailbox is neither modified nor read: the tool connects, counts, and disconnects.
  • Your credentials are encrypted and erased as soon as the test ends.
